Product Ratings & Reviews
4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for what it is, July 15, 2010
By Cam Soper (Smithville, MO USA)
This camera is an outstanding weatherproof day/night camera with composite video output (compatible with just about any TV with A/V inputs). I was pleasantly surprised at the image quality and the night vision. The transformer that powers the camera doesn't appear to be weatherproof, so you will want to take measures to protect it from the elements. The receiver has a good range with a visual meter to indicate signal quality. I had no issues getting a signal to my TV through several walls.

I would give it at least 4 stars. Originally ordered 4 cameras from Amazon. One failed to toggle between the low and high resolution modes. Thanks to Amazon's commendable replacement policy, no questions asked: the new item is on the way. Otherwise, the cameras work fine. Of course, you shouldn't expect HD image quality on your large wide screen TV. Also, the camera is designed to work in a closeup range (fixed focus). If you intend on having it monitor distant objects, please know that the produced image is quite blurry. My wife wanted to watch birds landing on her bird feeder 30-40 ft away, and she couldn't tell the birds from squirrels. In my case, I am using these cameras at the porch to show me who is standing right at the door, etc. Due to the intensity of wireless data transfer, the image transition is limited to 12 frames per second in the high resolution mode (and believe me, you will want to use that mode most of the time). So the video looks a bit slow. Also, please be aware that this is not a panoramic camera. The viewing angle is fairly meager (see specifications). The camera is definitely meant for a specific purpose and you will need to find out how it would apply to your concrete situation. I see this camera as to be primarily used in outdoor settings because the indoor lighting is rarely sufficient to have the camera operate in color mode. However, with this being said, the infrared black and white mode does not seem to be annoying too much (I have one of these cameras inside to watch our pets while we are gone). The wireless reception is great. If you have several cameras, be sure to pair them while they are still near to their receivers (that's prior to mounting them). From my observation, this ensures the pairing quality. With all the four cameras set up to operate at the same time, I haven't noticed any interference with the house appliances or the wireless router. From other reviews, it seems that this can be an issue. You can try to change the subfrequency your router operates on to avoid the interference. If you have an ATT's 2WIRE router, just type HOMEPORTAL in the address bar on your Internet Explorer and scroll through the menus to locate the frequency setup. If you are not electronically savvy, have someone else who knows what he is doing help you with this. You DO NOT want to mess up your router box!!!
While approaching this review in a critical manner, I should say that I am impressed with the camera (especially its wireless capabilities) and would recommend it to someone else. The setup was a breeze and I had it up and running in no time. Good product!

5.0 out of 5 starsSuper easy setup and good picture quality,, April 24, 2010

I was not sure what to expect from a product at this price point as it was much lower than a lot of other offerings. But when it arrived I was able to set it up and get it working in about 10 minutes without even looking at the instructions and there was a very crisp, clear color image regardless of the lighting. There is a very small wireless receiver unit that you can connect to a tv or security monitor via an RCA type video plug or a BNC connector respectively. There is a small well designed ac adapter to power it that only takes up one plug position on an outlet or most power bars. If you have more than one camera you can have the receiver switch between cameras or show up to four images all at once. The camera was fairly small with led lighting for dark environments and is capable of very bright crisp images, although like most survielence cameras the frame rate is pretty slow. It came with a very nice mounting bracket that allowed tilt and swivel in three axes, and can be mounted with three small screws. There is a small screw in antenna and another ac adapter like the one powering the receiver. The connector for the ac adapter seems robust but not sure how weatherproof it will be. I may get another camera or two as this seems to work pretty well and was very easy to set up. I have not experienced it yet but I hear these analog wireless devices are susceptible to interference and can interfere with other wireless devices like phones and networks. So great value for the money and wireless although you will need a power outlet near each camera for the ac adapter to power the camera and it's LEDs and internal transmitter.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe I'm giving 5 stars to a wireless 2.4GHz camera!, April 20, 2010
By HMMWV "God, Country, Corps" (santa clara, CA USA)
To my surprise there on the security monitor was a crisp, clean image with vibrant colors and sharp focus. I looked at it in amazement for a while then double checked the other half of 2.4 Ghz where my 802.11b network was running just fine. Great. Everyone was happy sharing 2.4 Ghz which was good because the last network link I installed had to go up at 5.8 Ghz due to overcrowding in 2.4 Ghz. I never thought I'd see the day when 2.4 GHz could be used with coexisting network hardware, but if you don't try to run 4 video channels or 802.11n, both of which use the whole band, you can get by with it and Lorex does a fine job moving channels to avoid the network hardware. You still must realize the horse can only pull so much load before something must go. On my setup it is one 5.5 MBps 802.11b network and one video channel - separated at opposite ends of the band. Right in the middle at 2.450 is the microwave oven leakage which is very small.

A] 1-4 cameras can be put into the system, although adding cameras adds the need for spectrum
B] Digital signal is moving around and can not be easily intercepted by 2.4 ghz radio receivers so very high level of privacy
C] Very easy setup and programming, online help, good documentation written in english and spanish
D] Haven't gotten to try it yet, but 18 IR leds are included for after dark as well as a method to remove the IR filter needed for good looking color during the day - another smart move by Lorex
E] reverse polarity SMA on receiver permits using specialized antennas for directional gain.
F] output from digital receiver is regular ANALOG NTSC VIDEO - still used by many DVRs and aux-inputs on even HDTV sets so it is highly compatible and adapters are included.
G] customizable receiver for 4 camera quad view or slideshow mode of 4 cameras
H] on screen signal strength indicator for each camera lets you know how well it comes in

I spent less than a half hour setting this camera up and am very pleased with its performance. At this price point I feel the camera is an excellent value. I was a little concerned about it operating in the 2.4 Ghz band but did not experience any problems with my other devices. For the past several weeks it has provided excellent outdoor surveillance and thus I highly recommend it.
